About us
Dr. LaTonya Nixon is a conscientious advocate for persons who choose to pursue higher education. As a low income, first generation student, she understands the educational journey of the at-risk population. As such, she is dedicated to offering support programming and assistance as persons seek to better their quality of life through education. Dr. Nixon has led teams to revolutionize student service areas to offer continuous improvement plans toward student success.
Dr. Nixon has received numerous awards, such as the Student Services Employee of the Year, TRIO Woman of Substance, etc. She has also been selected and received certificates from various Leadership cohorts, such As Pitt Community College Employee Leadership Institute, Southeastern Regional Emerging Leadership Institute, Greenville Chamber of Commerce Leadership Institute, NC Community College Leadership Program (NCCCLP) etc.
In addition to an astute educator, Dr. Nixon is also a well sought after motivational speaker. She has spoken to audiences, locally, nationally and internationally with her passionate conviction that education is the key to the quality of life. Dr. Nixon has demonstrated a unique approach to challenging workshop participants to refuse to accept mediocre as a way of life but to demand excellence from yourself and those in your circle of influence.
Dr. Nixon has held positions as an educator for the past 25 years to include positions at Tidewater Community College in Virginia as an instructor, TRIO: SSS Counselor and Regional One stop coordinator. In 2005, she relocated to North Carolina where she served as Director of TRIO programs at Pitt Community College. Later, as the Dean of Student Services at Roanoke-Chowan Community College. And she is currently the Vice President of Student Services at Beaufort County Community College. She is the proud mother of Tamika, Trevon, Deshaun and Jada. She is also an enthusiastic grandmother of three, Jazzy, Marley and Lucha.

Awakenings LLC is literally an attempt to awaken people to pursue their dreams by creating opportunities to enhance their life and work skills. I started Awakenings to provide insight to individuals who wanted to take their lives and careers to the next level. I have always been a generative thinker and doer and that is planning and implementing ideas and programs to impact my generation and the generations to come. J Squad
I started JSquad! because of my daughter, Jada. Growing up in poverty, I was never given the opportunity to explore travel. So, when I became an educated adult and begin to travel extensively, I learned that travel expands you. Therefore, I wanted to give my daughter the opportunity I did not have when I was a youth. So, JSquad was born!
JSquad! was launched to provide opportunities for young girls to travel locally and internationally. The program honors my daughter, Jada.
